The Spring Tech Cleanup Cheat Sheet
A seasonal cheat sheet for clearing digital clutter, refreshing security, and getting devices running smoothly.

Spring is a natural time to clear out the physical clutter at home, and your devices deserve the same attention. A seasonal cleanup keeps phones and computers running smoothly, protects your accounts, and makes everything easier to find. Use this cheat sheet as a quick guide and work through one section at a time.
Clean up your phone
- Delete apps you have not opened in months. Unused apps take up space and may still collect data.
- Review photos and videos. Remove blurry shots, duplicates, and screenshots you no longer need after making sure your backup is current.
- Clear out old downloads and large files, such as videos you have already watched.
- Check storage settings to see which apps use the most space.
- Update every app and the phone's system software.
- Review app permissions for location, camera, and microphone.
Refresh your computer
- Install all system and application updates.
- Uninstall programs you no longer use.
- Empty the downloads folder and the trash or recycle bin.
- Review startup programs, and disable the ones that slow your computer down at boot.
- Run the built-in disk cleanup or storage tool.
- Clean the physical machine. Use a soft cloth and compressed air for keyboard crumbs and dusty vents, with the device powered off.
Tidy your files
- Create a simple folder structure with clear names, such as documents, photos, and projects.
- Move scattered files into those folders.
- Rename important files so they are easy to find later.
- Delete duplicates and outdated drafts.
- Archive old projects to an external drive or cloud storage.
Refresh your security
- Update passwords for any accounts you have been meaning to fix, beginning with email and financial accounts.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where it is still missing.
- Review which devices are signed in to your key accounts and remove unfamiliar ones.
- Delete old accounts you no longer use, since each one is a possible target.
- Review the apps and services that have access to your accounts through social or email sign-in.
Check your backups
- Confirm that your phone and computer backups ran recently.
- Restore a single file to confirm the backup works.
- Make sure your cloud storage plan has room left.
- Consider an extra copy of irreplaceable photos and documents on an external drive.
Tune up your home network
- Restart the router and modem.
- Update the router's firmware.
- Review the list of devices on your network and remove any you do not recognize or use.
- Change the Wi-Fi password if it has been shared widely.
- Check that cables are secure and not worn.
Handle old gear
- Gather old chargers, cables, and devices you no longer use.
- Wipe unneeded devices carefully before recycling, donating, or selling them.
- Take electronics to a certified e-waste recycler or a manufacturer or retailer take-back program, instead of tossing them in the trash.
- Test batteries in remote controls and other small gadgets and replace worn ones.
Clean up your inbox and subscriptions
- Delete old messages in bulk, and sort the rest into folders if that helps.
- Unsubscribe from lists you no longer read, using the legitimate unsubscribe option inside messages from senders you recognize.
- Review recurring subscriptions and cancel any you no longer use.
A realistic schedule
You do not have to do it all in a day. Try one area per evening for a week, starting with updates and backups, which matter most. Set a reminder to repeat the routine in the fall.
A seasonal tech cleanup is really about updates, backups, security, and clutter. Keep this cheat sheet handy and you will have devices that feel lighter, safer, and easier to use.
