A Back-to-School Cheat Sheet for Laptops, Tablets, and Phones
Get student devices ready with setup, safety, and study-friendly settings before classes begin.

The start of the school year is busy, and device problems can make it harder. A short round of preparation makes sure laptops, tablets, and phones are ready for classwork, safe for students, and set up to avoid common headaches. Use this cheat sheet whether you are a student, a parent, or both.
Check what the school requires
- Read the school or teacher's technology guidelines for approved devices, software, and accounts.
- Confirm which learning platforms and apps students need, and install them early.
- Ask whether the school provides a device, and what the rules are for taking it home.
- Find out how assignments are submitted and what file types are accepted.
Get devices ready
- Install all system updates so nothing interrupts class time.
- Charge everything fully, and test the charger and cable.
- Check the battery. A device that cannot last through the school day may need a replacement battery or a portable charger.
- Confirm that the camera, microphone, and speakers work for video lessons.
- Clear unneeded files and apps to free up storage.
Set up accounts safely
- Create strong, unique passwords for each student account, and store them in a password manager.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the school or service supports it.
- Help younger students learn never to share passwords with friends.
- Make sure a parent or guardian has recovery access to the main accounts.
- Set up a school-only email account separate from personal accounts when possible.
Organize schoolwork
- Make a clear folder structure with one folder per subject.
- Name files with the class and assignment, such as history essay draft.
- Use cloud storage that syncs automatically so homework is not trapped on one device.
- Keep a simple weekly calendar for due dates, with reminders.
Protect the device
- Use a sturdy case or sleeve and a screen protector.
- Turn on the find-my-device feature.
- Label the device and charger with the student's name.
- Set an automatic screen lock with a PIN.
- Teach students not to leave devices unattended in lockers, buses, or cafeterias.
Set healthy boundaries
- Use the built-in parental or family controls to manage app access, content filters, and screen time as suits your family.
- Set downtime for evenings and bedtime so devices charge outside the bedroom.
- Turn off non-essential notifications during study time.
- Talk openly about what to do if someone sees something upsetting or receives a message from a stranger.
Teach online safety basics
- Think before sharing personal information, photos, or locations.
- Be careful with links and attachments in messages from unknown senders.
- Use only trusted sources for downloading apps and games.
- Report bullying or suspicious contact to a trusted adult.
- Understand that anything posted online can last longer than expected.
Back up from day one
- Turn on automatic backup for documents and photos.
- Save important projects in two places, such as the cloud and a flash drive.
- Make it a habit to save frequently while writing.
- Test that files can be opened from another device.
Prepare for problems
- Keep the support contact for the school and the device maker handy.
- Note the model and serial number.
- Learn the basic fixes: restart the device, check Wi-Fi, and update the app.
- Keep a spare charger and a pair of wired headphones in the backpack if possible.
A good back-to-school tech setup comes down to a few areas: follow school requirements, update and charge devices, secure accounts, organize files, and set healthy limits. Spend an evening on this list, and the school year can start smoothly.
